Learning English at Home

The Home Tutor Scheme allows you to learn English at home with the help of a tutor. You can study at your own pace and choose the areas of English you want to improve.

ELC AMEP will select a trained tutor for you. You will usually meet with your tutor for two hours once a week.

The time you spend with your tutor will be counted as one hour per week of the 510 hours available through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

What will you learn in the Home Tutor Scheme?

You decide the areas of English you want to improve. You can work on speaking and listening, practise your reading or writing. Your tutor will also help you learn about life in Australia so that you can settle well in the community.

Your tutor will work with you on the things that are important to you.

How will the Home Tutor Scheme help you?

Your tutor can help you

  • learn English
  • settle in Australia by understanding the Australian systems (eg health, education, transport)
  • find out about community services
(such as playgroups, local libraries, government departments, health centres)
  • look for work

Your tutor can also help you transfer to classes at ELC and in the community.

Where will you learn?

You can study anywhere that suits you and your tutor.

Who can join the Home Tutor Scheme?

If you are eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program and do not attend more than 10 hours of classes, you can join the Home Tutor Scheme.

When can you start the Home Tutor Scheme?

You can start any time during the year, as long as a suitable tutor is available.
